Emergency access (also called Firefighter access in SAP terminology) is one of the most audited and least-understood controls in SAP estates.
Two processes, not one: who may use an SAP Firefighter account, and how each session is booked, started, controlled and reviewed. With real smartGRC screens.
Session-by-session Firefighter review misses 8 control gaps that only exist across sessions. See how cross-session AI review in smartAccess surfaces them.
An AI agent runs more transactions in a minute than a person runs in a week. The answer is not "read the log" - it is exception-based review with a whitelist + blacklist policy.
Six months of production SAP S/4HANA Firefighter data. 600 sessions, 11 emergency accounts, 2.55M log entries. Six control signals classical review cannot detect.
GRC Ninja experts break down the five most common mistakes in emergency and privileged access management for SAP - and how to avoid them.
How do you put out fires in an ERP system? GRC Ninja experts explain emergency and privileged access management in SAP - process, logs, and the right tools.
Emergency access (also called Firefighter access in SAP terminology) is one of the most audited and least-understood controls in SAP estates. The control on paper is clear: grant elevated access on a time-boxed reservation basis with full log review afterwards. The reality is that most enterprises have 500+ Firefighter sessions per year, manual review covers 5-10% of them, and the rest get an accept click. This category collects practitioner content on how to make Firefighter actually work as a control.
Articles cover Firefighter workflow design, session log review at scale, AI-assisted log analysis, just-in-time (JIT) access provisioning, cross-domain emergency access (SAP + non-SAP), and the case study of an AI agent surfacing 6 control signals from 600 production Firefighter sessions that manual review missed.
This category is for SAP Security professionals, internal audit teams, GRC managers and CISO offices responsible for emergency access governance. If you have a Firefighter audit finding, are scaling emergency access beyond what manual review can handle, or are evaluating AI tools for log review automation, this is the practitioner content most relevant.
Firefighter access is SAP terminology for time-boxed elevated authorization, originally introduced by SAP GRC Access Control as the EAM (Emergency Access Management) module. The pattern: requester reserves a Firefighter ID with reason and time window, performs the emergency work, logs are reviewed afterwards by an independent reviewer, decision is documented. The control depends entirely on the log review actually happening.
Three structural reasons. (1) Volume: most enterprises have 500+ Firefighter sessions per year, manual review at 5-10 minutes per session is hundreds of hours of work. (2) Sampling: at 5-10% sampling rate, 90% of sessions get accept-click without inspection. (3) Cross-session patterns: the riskiest signals (peer-review approval loops, server-host activity under emergency accounts, payment-run sessions sitting in PENDING) only appear when you compute across the full dataset, not session-by-session. AI agents address all three.
AI agents review session logs at scale, surface cross-session patterns invisible to per-session review, and produce audit-relevant findings the human reviewer then validates. We published a detailed case study of an AI agent surfacing 6 control signals from 600 production Firefighter sessions - signals the classical session-by-session review playbook could not catch.
